The heavy rains brought by the shear line, which triggered flooding in several localities in Negros Occidental on January 30 and 31, caused damage worth more than P6.55 million to crops and livestock.
A consolidated report from the Department of Agriculture – Negros Island Region (DA-NIR) revealed that the rain and flooding affected four localities in the province, directly impacting approximately 225 farmers.
The report indicated that crop damage reached P2,220,074.61, affecting about 28 hectares of farmland. Sagay City incurred P2,109,065.66 in crop losses, while Calatrava reported P111,008.
Furthermore, the shear line resulted in the death of approximately 2,265 heads of various farm animals, amounting to P4,330,029 in losses.
Sagay City suffered the most significant livestock losses, totaling P3,395,306.90. This was followed by Toboso with P934,722.98, and Murcia with P7,803.
In light of the damage incurred, and as Tropical Storm Basyang approaches the entire Negros Island Region, DA-NIR Director Engr. Albert Barrogo has urged farmers to secure their crops and livestock.
He advised farmers to harvest their crops before the expected arrival of the storm.
“Unfortunately, PAGASA forecasts that this storm will affect the entire NIR. Farmers should prepare and, if possible, harvest their crops beforehand to avoid severe losses,” he said, emphasizing the importance of preemptive action to protect small farmers.
The director also issued an advisory urging farmers to take preventive measures, such as relocating their livestock to safe areas, and securing their machinery.
According to the weather bureau, Tropical Storm Basyang is expected to pass through the Negros Island Region today, February 6.*
