Silay, Escalante pugs shine at inter-LGU boxing at the park

The Negros Occidental Provincial Government, in cooperation with the Provincial Sports Office, successfully organized the inter-LGU boxing elimination tournament in Silay City on September 17-18.

The 2-day Boxing at the Park attracted several excited spectators as a total of 15 LGUs participated in the eliminations, including La Castellana, Silay City, Escalante City, Candoni, E.B. Magalona, Hinigaran, Murcia, Himamaylan, Bago City, Sagay City, San Carlos City, Victorias City, Don Salvador Benedicto, La Carlota City and Bacolod City.

The event was divided into two categories – the kids (ages 11-13) and the school boys (ages 14-16).

The Boxing at the Park held 16 and 11 bouts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, Silay City recorded the most wins with 3 victories in matches held at the Silay City Covered Court.

Escalante City, on the other hand, took the lead with 3 recorded wins during the bouts held on Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Brgy. E. Lopez Covered Court.

During the opening ceremony on Saturday, Atty. Joebel Yu welcomed the participating athletes from various LGUs by giving a short message, which emphasized the value of discipline and sportsmanship among athletes.

Meanwhile, Provincial Sports Office head Anthony Carlo Agustin and Silay City Mayor Joedith Gallego were present at the boxing event on Sunday.

The Inter-LGU boxing tournament was in accordance with the project of Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson to promote boxing among the youth and the LGUs of the province.

Through this campaign, Lacson and Agustin aimed to scout aspiring boxers that could potentially represent the province in national and international bouts.

Provincial Boxing Sports Coordinator Aden Nietes officially declared the tournament open and it was made possible through the assistance of Josue Nietes – tournament manager, Dan Nietes – supervisor, Henry Henceboy Cestina – boxing announcer, Isidro Petallar Jr. – timer, and Bernaldo Cordero and Antonio Sevilla – glove stewards.

Moreover, the match was under the supervision of tournament referees and judges – Romeo Sumalapaw, Reynante Parohinog and Joselito Parohinog.

Provincial Sports Office staff Leo Romitman, Gunther Diaz, Kristine Joyce Belonio, Ronald Allan Treyes, Suzette Papio and Fred Dizon also attended the two-day inter-LGU boxing event.*
