Smart, Globe block 5K sites to protect kids

A total of 3,011 websites that host illicit content involving children have, so far, been blocked by PLDT and its wireless subsidiary Smart.

In a statement, PLDT-Smart said the blocked websites were based on the mandate of the National Telecommunications Commission to continue protecting Filipino netizens from online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSEAC).

Telecommunications service provider Globe also said it blocked 2,521 websites in support of the government’s efforts to combat online child pornography.

It also welcomed Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles’ warning against internet service providers (ISP) to put a stop to the circulation of malicious content or suffer possible sanctions.

Angel Redoble, chief information security officer of the ePLDT Group, said users who will attempt to open these blacklisted websites will automatically be redirected to a landing page informing them of the site’s violation of the country’s Anti-Child Pornography Law.

Since the passage of Republic Act 9775, or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, Globe has complied and blocked sites that have been identified by law enforcement agencies, those endorsed by the NTC for blocking, or identified through Globe’s Security Operations Center intelligence. It also invested USD2.7 million in a content-filtering system, the “PlayItRight” program, that target illegal/pirated content and online child pornography.*
