A resolution urging all Bacolodnons to observe precautionary measures against heat stroke was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod Tuesday.
The resolution authored by Councilor Em Ang said recent advisories and weather reports continue to record dangerously high heat indices across the region, directly threatening the daily activities and well-being of residents in Bacolod City.
Prolonged exposure to extreme heat and peak sun hours significantly elevates the risk of heat stroke, a critical and life-threatening medical emergency, it said.
Heat stroke occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature. It is characterized by a dangerously high body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, and rapid pulse, requiring immediate medical intervention to prevent permanent organ damage or fatality, the resolution said.
It is the fundamental responsibility of the City Government to proactively promote public health and protect vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers, from the direct and immediate threat of Heat Stroke during periods of extreme weather conditions, it said.
The resolution is also highly encouraging the general public to actively adopt essential safety practices, specifically: staying adequately hydrated by continuously drinking plenty of water throughout the day; avoiding strenuous physical activities and minimizing outdoor exposure during peak sun hours; seeking shaded areas, well-ventilated rooms, or air-conditioned spaces whenever possible; and wearing light, loose, and breathable clothing to help regulate body temperature.
The Bacolod City Health Office and the Bacolod City DRRMO are also urged to continuously intensify their joint information, education, and communication campaigns specifically focused on heat stroke prevention, recognizing its severe symptoms, and proper emergency response protocols.*
