SP warns public on cyber security

• CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod is encouraging all public officials, government employees, departments, agencies, and those persons clothed with public interest, to exercise extreme caution in their cyber dealings, including the use of social media.

The resolution authored by Councilor Jason Isidro Villarosa is also requesting the Department of Information and Communications Technology for assistance regarding the same.

It may well be of public knowledge that the MassKara Festival page has been hacked and has been posting inappropriate content, it said.

Recently, the social media account of Negros Occidental, 3rd District Representative Jose Francisco “Kiko” Benitez has succumbed to the same situation, the resolution said.

Social media accounts of public officials may now be deemed extensions of their offices where they can maintain their connection with the general public, it said.

The resolution said it has been observed that the hacking incidents have now been frequent, not only targeting private individuals but also those in important positions.

The help and assistance of the Department of Information and Communications Technology is sincerely requested to prevent such adverse effect to the harmonious dealings with the public sector on one hand, and the reading public on the other, it added.*
