Spreading Christmas cheer

The heavens opened up in a torrential downpour, yet the relentless rain failed to extinguish the fiery determination of the seven kingdoms, all vying to claim the coveted championship title in The 2023 Christmas Festival of Lights.

However, it was the Orange Erudites from the College of Engineering who triumphantly retained their title, showcasing their prowess and securing their position as the reigning champions.

“Erudite” is an adjective that describes someone as having or showing great knowledge or learning. It often implies a deep understanding of various subjects, indicating intellectual sophistication and expertise. The Erudites showcased their mastery through perfectly synchronized movements, skillfully manipulating lanterns and other visual elements. Their performance at the Bacolod City Government Center grounds transformed into a captivating spectacle, eliciting sheer delight from the enthralled audience. Undoubtedly, their skillful integration of lights into their choreography not only gave them a distinct edge over all competing teams but also underscored their potential as future engineers, showcasing a blend of creativity and technical prowess.

The Erudites exuded confidence and determination as they set their sights on reclaiming the same title they secured in 2022. Upon arriving at the BCGC grounds with their champion float, their assurance mirrored their past success in both the title and the float competition. With deep emotion, Acelle Marie Tadiaman, the team captain, graciously accepted the back-to-back awards from Dr. Ryan Mark Molina, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of STI West Negros University, in a touching moment at the awarding ceremony.

Resolute and self-assured, the team’s lantern bearers and dancers approached their task with the unwavering determination reminiscent of soldiers heading into battle. Each participant’s gaze was fixed firmly on the prize, reflecting their collective commitment to success.

However, the Erudites weren’t the sole contenders driven by a fierce determination to win. Every other team presented such formidable performances that the judges found themselves grappling with a challenging decision in selecting the rightful recipient of the crown.

The live nativity scene presented by the Yellow Tycoons on their float cast a spotlight on the essence of the season. Centered around the depiction of the baby Jesus nestled in a manger, accompanied by his mother, Mary, and father, Joseph, the scene was enriched by the presence of the Three Kings and angels, creating a poignant tableau.*

On the inaugural Saturday of the Christmas month, the Blue Guardians, a group of prospective educators, demonstrated not only their eloquence and compassion but also their grace and charm. Through meticulously woven choreography, they conveyed a profound sense of the Advent season, capturing the essence of the awaited arrival of the Son of God and leaving spectators immersed in its spirit. The Guardians’ performance made them win first runner-up.

Although the Yellow Tycoons secured the position of second runner-up, Dr. Mima Villanueva, dean of the College of Business Management and Accountancy, asserted that this achievement was similar to winning the championship. The triumph was particularly poignant for the Tycoons as it marked their inaugural entry into the Top 3, making the victory all the more significant and sweet.

The Green Titans from the College of Arts & Sciences, the Red Sentinels from the College of Information & Communication Technology, the Pink Vikings from the College of Hospitality & Tourism Management, and the Purple Wizards from the College of Criminal & Justice Education all delivered remarkable performances, painting the atmosphere with a vibrant burst of colors. The delightful spectacle along Burgos Street, leading to the Circumferential Road, captivated onlookers.

The parade of giant stars, floats, lantern bearers, fancy drillers, and drum and bugle corps culminated at the BCGC, where the grand switch-on ceremony took place, illuminating the giant Christmas Tree and the rest of the festive decorations at the Government Center.

In 2018, the tradition of celebrating Christmas took on a more formal and enduring status with the establishment of City Ordinance 868. This ordinance designates every second Saturday of December as the official annual observance of the Christmas Festival of Lights in the city.

Beyond its ability to attract a crowd, the yearly Christmas Festival of Lights at STIWNU, in collaboration with the local government of Bacolod City, serves as a poignant reminder to every Bacolodnon. It underscores that Christmas is a season for individuals to ready themselves for the coming of the Savior. The advent period is a profound reflection on welcoming Jesus, a tangible embodiment of God’s profound love for humanity.

This festive event serves as a platform for diverse sectors to unite and engage in a meaningful endeavor. It instills in the younger generation the significance of preserving and nurturing their culture, emphasizing the joyous act of celebrating the most special occasions by spreading happiness, warmth, and smiles.

Credit is rightfully attributed to Madame Suzette Agustin, the former president of then West Negros College, whose enduring legacy has enabled many generations to take part in spreading Christmas cheer.*
