Summit won the first Fil-Sino Michael Miranda Memorial Basketball Tournament, overpowering Tiger Black with a 94-78 victory on Monday.
The Summit used a balanced offensive attack from Justine Baldonado and Jappy Cuaycong, who combined for 18 points, and deadly accurate shooting from behind the arc from RJ Guerrero and Timothy Chua, to build a double-digit lead, 27-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Tiger Black played the second quarter with a different attitude, with Oda Tampus looking brutally dominant, scoring 12 points on the attack, aided by John Lee’s excellent execution from behind the arc, dropping two three balls. Tiger Black outscored Summit, 24-15, reducing a 15-point deficit into six.
The unsung heroes of Summit came from the third quarter as Alvin Chua and Alan Su’s defense stifled the Tiger Black offense to a 25-9 quarter, with the help from Justine Baldonado and Miko Yee scoring a total of 14 points, bolstering their lead to 22 points going into the final quarter. Despite being scoreless, Alan Su was dubbed by teammate Jappy Cuaycong as the X-Factor of the game.
Tiger Black kept fighting hard on the court, with Oda Tampus dropping 6 triples including a four-point play, but that was not enough to complete the comeback since the Summit had all the answers to their offense. Justine Baldonado led Summit with 28 points, Jappy Cuaycong 13, Third Deloso added 11 points and Yanyan Muyco totaled 10 points. Oda Tampus with the game high 31 points, George Arazo added 15 points, Justin Kilayko 8 points and John Lee 6 points.*
