The General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA), slams the government’s “selective benevolence” on the suspension of the transport fare hike.
GAWA secretary general Wennie Sancho views the government’s suspension of the transport fare hike as a calculated move to deflect attention from the pressing issue of wage increase for workers. “We see this as a clear indication that the government is not serious about addressing the plight of the workers amidst soaring prices of essential goods and services”, he said in a statement.
“While GAWA welcomes any measure that eases the burden on commuters, we cannot ignore the fact that this move is likely to be used as a pretext to deny workers of the much-needed wage increase. The government’s silence on the issue of wages speaks volumes about its priorities,” Sancho said.
“We demand that the government stop playing politics with the welfare of the people and take concrete steps to address the rising cost of living. A wage increase is not a favor, it’s a right. We will not be swayed by token gestures and we will continue to push for a just and fair wages for all workers,” he said.
GAWA calls on all workers and concerned citizens to remain vigilant and join us in our fight for a living wage. One thing is clear, the suspension of transport fare hike had raised more questions than answers. Was it a genuine attempt to help commuters or a clever way to stave off labor demands? Sancho asked.
The government’s stance on wage increase for the workers in the private sector seemed to be reinforced by its silence on the issue. There is no indication that a wage increase for the workers is forthcoming.
The government is trying to show that it’s looking out for the common man, but in reality, it’s just delaying the inevitable, Sancho added.*
