Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia urged young Bacolodnons to take an active role in community building as he cited the role of the youth in local governance.

Leonardia keynoted early this week the Bacolod City Local Youth Development Council convention attended by various youth organizations and youth-serving organizations, a press release from the city said yesterday.

“Our youth play a vital role in local governance. That is why, it is important that you take part in the undertakings of our LYDC,” Leonardia said.

Councilor Ayesha Joy Villaflor, president of Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, spearheaded the activity that allowed leaders and members of YOs and YSOs to share their insights on pressing issues confronting the young generation today.

LYDC is the official partner of the SK Federation in crafting and implementing the Local Youth Development Plan.

“This activity aims to establish city-wide and multi-sectoral youth participation in local governance and in nation-building,” Villaflor said.

Leonardia also commended the SK Federation and the Local Youth Development Office for facilitating the activity, which became an avenue for youth participants to propose possible actions aimed at addressing issues, the press release said.

Among the YOs and YSOs that joined the convention were the Negrosanon Young Leaders Institute Inc., Amlig, Children Optimization for the Revitalization of Environment, Linghod, Faithfull-Proyekto Pagtuo Boy Scout of the Philippines, Junior Chamber International Bacolod, Humanist Alliance of the Philippines International Bacolod, PSYA Fisherfolk Group, NEW, Rotaract Club of Metro Bacolod, and the Rotaract Club of USLS Bacolod.

The Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terrorismo, Banaag LGBTQ Inc., Bagani Bacolod, Youth Empowering Youth, Sowing Legacy Movement Inc., and Amnesty International Bacolod also participated in the convention.

“We, in the SK Federation, appreciate the efforts and time of our young leaders. We were amazed by the wisdom and knowledge that they shared with us. Nothing truly beats a generation of young people working together to take the higher roads and courageously act on the challenges of our growing society. Indeed, the youth are the hope of this nation,” Villaflor added.*
