Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon, in his homily yesterday, called on the public to take seriously the gravity of the COVID-19 situation by doing their share to prevent its spread.

With the spike of COVID-19 cases in Bacolod and Negros Occidental, the bishop called for cooperation with government authorities in the strict implementation of health protocols.

The bishop pointed out that if the spread of COVID-19 is not stopped, everyone will suffer.

“So I ask everyone to take seriously the gravity of the situation and to cooperate with government authorities regarding strict compliance with (health) protocols,” he said.

The bishop stressed the need for hand hygiene, wearing of facemasks in public, the observance of social distancing, and the avoidance of gatherings as concrete steps to abate the further spread of infection.

The bishop also asked for prayers, support and gratitude for frontliners.

“Let us pray for our frontliners because many of them are discouraged already and have low, low morale. If you can contact them, even by text, assure them of our support, of our appreciation and thanks, and, most of all, of our prayers,” the bishop said.

On August 1, the bishop issued an advisory to all priests of the Diocese of Bacolod to include in their homilies for Sunday the Church’s call “for heightened awareness about COVID among the people, the need for strict compliance of health protocols, and the need to pray for those suffering from COVID-19, for government officials and for the frontliners – all of which are demanded by our Christian duty.”

“I am certain that God will get us through this pandemic because He cares. But He asks that we, too, care by doing the simple things needed to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the deadly virus,” the bishop said.*
