Talisay City champion in solon’s hoops tourney

The powerhouse basketball team of Talisay City emerged as champion of the 1st Cong. Kiko’s Cup Metro 3rd Basketball Tournament, defeating E.B. Magalona with a score of 72-70 in a tightly contested final game held on February 4 at the E.B. Magalona Public Plaza.

As tournament champion, Talisay cagers were awarded the P50,000 cash prize, while first runner up E.B. Magalona received P30,000, during the awarding program led by Third District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Benitez and Tournament Manager Talisay City Councilors Rolin Meliton, together with E.B. Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon.

Second runner up, Silay City basketballers received P20,000 cash prize and third runner up Victorias City got P15,000.

The tournament’s mythical 5 was composed of Julio Magbanua Jr. of Murcia, Louie Jay Villarosa of E.B. Magalona, Elliel John Resolis from Victorias, Silay’s Sonny Katipunan, and Earvin de la Peña from Talisay. The players recognized for their exceptional performance throughout the tournament also received P5,000 each.

The season most valuable player (MVP) award went to Rommel Hechanova of E.B. Magalona, while the Finals MVP was won by Nike Montalvo of Talisay. Both received P3,000 each.

During the opening program of the tournament finals, Benitez thanked all the players and tournament officials, as he assured all that no matter the outcome of the games, the entire Third District is the real winner.

“No matter who wins, we are all winners, ” Benitez stressed as he announced that more sports tournaments for the Third District will be planned in the future to accommodate more sports.

Among local government officials supported their basketball teams were Talisay Vice Mayor Nic Jalandoni and Councilor Kenn Tirthndas; Silay City Councilors Ryan Gamboa and Lyndon Bernardo; Victorias Mayor Javi Benitez with councilors Dexter Senido and Audie Malaga.

Also present and rooting for the E.B. Magalona team were their municipal officials, led by Mayor Marvin Malacon and Vice Mayor Eric Matulac.

The 1st Cong. Kiko’s Cup Metro 3rd Basketball Tournament was launched December 2022, with the aim of renewing ties and camaraderie and promote anew wellness and a spirit of sportsmanship among the 5 LGUs of the Third District of Negros Occidental.*
