The rot in our republic

The Philippine Constitution does not stutter: “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.” Yet for nearly 40 years, Congress has refused to define that law—because it would mean cutting off its own limbs.

Political dynasties are not just a nuisance. They are the rot that infects our democracy. They monopolize power, weaponize poverty, and turn public office into a family business. In Negros Occidental, Bacolod City, and across the archipelago, the same surnames dominate ballots, budgets, and barangays. This is not governance—it is feudalism with campaign jingles.

The latest Anti-Dynasty bill in Congress is a mockery. It proposes a weak ban on relatives up to the second degree, only within the same jurisdiction. It’s a loophole-ridden fig leaf designed to appease public outrage while preserving dynastic rule. It does not ban proxy candidates. It does not cover national-local overlaps. It does not dismantle the machinery of inherited power.

Civil society must not settle for crumbs. We must demand a real law—one that bans candidacies up to the fourth degree of consanguinity, across all jurisdictions, with automatic disqualification. We must expose watered-down bills for what they are: legislative cowardice.

In Bacolod, the fight is stirring. Youth groups, educators, and faith leaders are rallying behind campaigns like “Walang Forever sa Political Dynasty!” They are breaking the silence, naming the problem, and demanding change. This movement must grow. It must be relentless.

Let us be clear: political dynasties are not inevitable. They persist because we allow them to. Because we vote for them. Because we stay silent. That silence ends now.

This is not just about law—it’s about justice. It’s about breaking the cycle of corruption, patronage, and inherited impunity. It’s about building a republic where leadership is earned, not inherited.

Let this be a warning to the dynasts: the people are watching. The people are organizing. And the people are done being ruled by bloodlines.*
