Thousands of members expected to join INC ‘Rally for Peace’ in Bacolod

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

More than 20,000 members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo in Negros Island are expected today to converge in Bacolod City at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon and Park, as part of a nationwide Rally for Peace.

The Bacolod City government will implement temporary road closures on January 13, from 6am to 12 midnight, following the request of INC, which was approved by the City Council.

The road closure will be from Cottage Road fronting the SSS Building to 15th Street, and a portion of 6th street, the North and South Capitol Roads.

The event also prompted Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson to suspend work in Capitol-based offices after lunch of Jan. 13, according to Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz.

Jose Antonio Robello, Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) deputy chief, said in a radio interview that they are deploying 70 traffic enforcers in areas covered by road closure, to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The Bacolod City Police Office is also deploying about 130 police personnel, augmented by personnel of the Bureau of Fire and City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.

Sagip partylist Rep. Rodante Marcoleta clarified that the INC does not take sides in the political rift between President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte.

Marcoleta, a prominent member of the INC, said in an interview with the Bilyonaryo News Channel’s At The Forefront, “The INC would like to see people like the Vice President and the President work together. That is the essence of good government.”

Marcoleta said the [nationwide] rally aims to promote peace and unity amid political tensions.

“I think it is only a peace rally advocating… it’s a rally for peace, that’s all. I think the INC wants to send a message across the nation that peace is a factor in achieving development and progress in this country,” he added.

Three impeachment complaints have been filed against Duterte in the House of Representatives based on multiple grounds, including culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, bribery, and other high crimes.*
