Technological University of the Philippines Visayas honored its graduates during the 46th Commencement Exercises held on June 25, at the SMX Convention Center, Bacolod City with the theme, Transcend Unite Progress: Igniting Innovations Through Linkages and Partnerships.
Former DICT Undersecretary Jocelle Batapa-Sigue inspired and challenged the graduates to take advantage of the Philippine demographic dividend and the potential for accelerated economic growth that arises when a country’s working age population (15-64 years old) becomes larger than the dependent population. She said this creates a unique window of opportunity – a “demographic sweet spot” where the country can reap economic social gains when the right policies and investments are in place.
The 862 graduates from Class 2025 were urged to make the culture of TUPV being ‘Home of the Topnotchers’ unbreakable as it carries the pride in wearing the university’s name knowing it carries the weight of decades of trailblazers.
Forty-two of them finished with Latin honors led by batch valedictorian Irene Dequilato, one of the pioneer students in the Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics Engineering with an 8.715 average earning her Magna Cum Laude and a Grayhawk Award for Academic Excellence.
“Let’s chase purpose and passion. Because the future is not waiting anymore, it’s here and it is ours to shape,” Dequilato expressed.
Meanwhile, thirty-seven graduated from the Post Baccalaureate Degree in a ceremony held on June 26, at the Edgardo Hall, Nature’s Village Resort in Talisay City.
CEO of Arslan SRS Philippines, Augustus Caesar B. Esmeralda delivered the commencement address reminding the graduates of the celebration’s theme.
“These are not merely decorative words on a banner or a ceremonial slogan. These are the fundamental principles that will define your success in the world you’re about to inherit—a world that the military calls VUCA: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous,” Esmeralda said.
He further challenged them to reimagine VUCA through a different lens—one that transforms obstacles into opportunities: Vigilance in recognizing emerging trends and disruptions Understanding the interconnected nature of global challenges; Collaboration as the foundation for sustainable solutions and Action that is purposeful, ethical, and transformative.”
As the graduates embark on the journey ahead, it is the hope of everyone that they carry with them not just their individual credentials but collective hopes for the world is waiting for their contribution.
“Make it count. May you walk forward—undaunted, united, and unstoppable,” Esmeralda said.
Dr. Marita Canapi, CHED Commissioner in her message reminded TUPVians to carry the core values of their alma mater and that success is the result of effort, innovation thrives on initiative, but the willingness to act and to lead drive lasting and positive change.*
