Two ash emissions reported at Kanlaon Volcano

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported two ash emissions on February 28 at Kanlaon Volcano, which remains on Alert Level 3.

According to the PHIVOLCS, the emissions generated grayish plumes that rose up to 150 meters above the summit crater, before drifting west to southwest.

It also recorded 1,920 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from the crater on Feb. 27, and logged three volcanic quakes.

Task Force Kanlaon has identified La Castellana as the hardest hit area, in case of a major eruption of Kanlaon.

Task Force Kanlaon chief Raul Fernandez disclosed that La Castellana proposes barangay Manghanoy as an evacuation site, it could still be within the danger area.*
