The two guerilla fronts of the New People’s Army Central Negros 1 (CN1) and Central Negros 2 (CN2), both under the Komiting Rehiyonal Negros/Cebu/Bohol/Siquijor (KR NCBS), have been classified by the Philippine Army as “weakened”, due to successful focused military operations and non-traditional military activities, in tandem with local government units, national government agencies and civil society organizations, as well as the private sector.

In the entire Negros Island, Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, declared that Philippine Army units, including the 302nd Infantry Brigade, are making headway in the campaign against the local communist terrorist group.

“We will sustain our efforts to further reduce the insurgency in Negros,” Pasaporte, who hosted a fellowship dinner with representatives of various local media outlets in Negros Occidental on September 24, in Talisay City, said.

Sixteen NPA members, including three leaders and members of CN 2, recently surrendered to authorities in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, while almost 2,000 rounds of ammunition and 10 homemade landmines and anti-personnel mines hidden in an abandoned rebel camp in Himamaylan City, were recovered by 94IB soldiers.

Two months ago, 19 members of CN2 also surrendered to 94 IB, aside from several members of CN1 who died in various encounters, military records showed.

From January to up this time, Pasaporte reported that they initiated 23 encounters against the NPA, noting also the “immersion” of rebel cadres who are students from Cebu and Negros, with some of them killed in encounters.

Internal problems, especially the leadership crisis in two guerilla fronts in central Negros, have driven some of their members who are tired of fighting against the government, to go inactive and later surrender to the government, the Army general said, citing information came from their disgruntled comrades.

The Northern and South East Fronts of KR NCBS are claimed to have been dismantled by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

With the P500,000 bounty for Arnel Tapang, leader of the remnants of Northern Negros Front, who is allegedly responsible for the killing of a barangay captain and two civilians in Calatrava, Pasaporte said “we will get him soon,” adding that they received reports that he is hiding in Toboso.*
