UNBL Chairman’s Cup games gather steam

The basketball teams of Bacolod Tay Tung High School, Colegio San Agustin, and the Talisay Sharks all notched their third victories in the United Negros Basketball League 2nd Chairman’s Cup in games played Wednesday and Thursday at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School covered court. 

Paul Barcelona erupted for 44 points, spearheading Talisay Sharks to another dominating performance against NYBC, and a final score of 132-60, in the 15-and-under category of Bracket B. Toby Orbista added 25 points, while Ace Cortejo and John Gerardo had 12 apiece. NYBC was led by Jayven Pachoro and Ritz Orlen Dioso, with 15 and 10 points, respectively. 

Team Kenn overwhelmed CSA-B, 73-51, to remain the only undefeated team in Bracket A with a 2-0 card. Efren Manday Jr. and Anacito Docto paced Kenn with 21 points apiece, John Matavia, Lance Arrey, and Alcantara delivered 9 each, while Reyland Jimena scored 8 for CSA-B in the game.

CSA-B managed to bounce back the following day, as they overpowered Megalodon 84-46. Cian Gumacal led CSA-B with 16 points, John Parohinog – 14, and Matthew Garcia – 13. Aejay Aurelio posted 11 markers for Megalodon. 

Megalodon also barged into the win column, defeating 1Negros Jaguars 78-46, with Bathan scoring 21 points, Aurelio – 15, Mar Coronica – 9. John Agravante’s 13 points and John Benedict Falcis 12 points provided the bright spots for the Jaguars. 

University of St. La Salle overwhelmed a debuting Red Owl, 69-30, as Gian Alexis Vasquez drilled 16 markers, John Paul Cabayao dropped 12, John Tory Newman – 8. Kert Española was the lone double digit scorer for Red Owl with 13 points. 

Howard Gonzales starred for St. Joseph School-La Salle Lineage, scoring 22 points as they triumphed over NYBC, 84-59. Raffy Canatoy added 19, and Andrey Castro – 10 for SJS-LS.  John Erick Cagalcal scored 16, and Dioso had 13 points for NYBC. 

In the 17-and-under category, Adrian Alagaban nabbed back-to-back Royal Star Trading player of the game honors, leading BTTHS against previously undefeated C & C Café / Ang Bata Hardware, 60-37, and La Carlota Jaguars, 90-68.

Alagaban unloaded 15 points, Ronn Bedonia – 11, Alfred Ysulan and Justine Jalea – 9 each, while Leopoldo Apdo delivered 17 points for C&C Café.  The following day, Alagaban scored 17 points, backstopped by Joachim Chuatico’s 14, Chino Uy and Jalea had 12 each, and Ahron John Cagayao – 10.  Justin Troi Magbanua scored 12 and Reignzy Jamili added 11 points for La Carlota. 

Acster Marketing Player of the game Ceasar Bigcas scored 12 points to lead CSA-B against Notre Dame, 76-63.  Brent Magno added 11 pts. for CSA-B , Richard Militante – 9, Wendel Herida, Vince Nathaniel Maro, and Sam Sagansay  – 8 markers apiece, while Kent Arriesgado and Andrei Gallego bannered Notre Dame with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Shockwave and 1Negros Jaguars registered their first victories in the tournament when the former escaped the Bobcats, 62-59, as Jofel Flores tallied  17 points, while the Bobcats were led by Dyne Kang with 13 points, and Terrence Java added 8.

In the other game, Earl Biason scored 18 to lead the 1Negros Jaguars over Team Spartan, 56-47. John Agustin Lachica scored 10 for 1Negros while, Alpay and Alisin scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Team Spartan.
