C & C Café / Ang Bata Hardware, University of St. La Salle, and Colegio San Agustin Bacolod opened the United Negros Basketball League 2nd Chairman’s Cup tournament with two wins in the 17-and-Under category games last weekend at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School.
Royal Star Trading player of the game Emmanuel Salvio registered 18 and 16 points in two consecutive games, leading USLS to back to back wins against La Carlota Jaguars 84-57, and Bobcats 72-57.
CSAB dominated Team Spartan 96-38, and survived El Tzino / Trinity 77-72, while C & C Café / Ang Bata Hardware dealt Shockwave and Bobcats their second losses of the games with a 73-64 and 73-56 scoreline, led by Francis Camento’s 16 and 15 points.
Bacolod Tay Tung High School routed Shockwave 105-68, and Notre Dame escaped CNHS Dreams 73-70. El Tzino / Trinity also notched a victory against the 1Negros Jaguars.
Meanwhile, the Talisay Sharks registered back to back wins in the 15-and-Under category with emphatic victories against the Bobcats, 115-55, and BTTHS, 94-49. Acster Marketing player of the game Paul Barcelona sizzled with 33 points and Toby Orbista added 27 against the Bobcats. Against BTTHS, Barcelona followed up with 22 more points, and Jerry Binguan added 20.
Francis Lamasan and Aethan Pimentel combined for 11 made triples to score 33 and 21 points respectively, to turn back St. John’s Institute 84-76. SJI however managed to bounce back and subdue St. Joseph School-La Salle Lineage 68-50 in the following game.
Team Kenn trounced Megalodon 91-58, while USLS overwhelmed 1Negros Jaguars 108-27 but fell to CSAB the next day with a heartbreaking 59-57 decision.
In his welcome speech, UNBL president Jun Ballesteros reminded the student-players that the tournament is not only to showcase their talents, but is also for character development.
He also emphasized that among the values the UNBL gives great importance to, are fairness and respect for authorities, the rules, the opponent, and one’s self. To end his speech, Ballesteros highlighted the focus of UNBL on the grassroots development of Negros basketball.
Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson likewise gave his opening remarks by extending his gratitude to the UNBL for sponsoring the tournament.
He also mentioned that the participating age groups of 15-under and 17-under are the exact age groups that the province wants to develop and reminded the student-players that education should remain their priority.
Chairman’s Cup Iloilo lent their support with the presence of Assistant Commissioner Stephen Lacuesta, Alfonso Alfaro, and Jerry Lorca.
Lacuesta is also the SBP Region 6 admin officer, Alfaro is SBP Region 6 head of referees and Lorca is the SBP Region 6 technical head.*
