Undas ready

As the nation prepares to observe Undas, the combination of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days – where millions of Filipinos once again embark on their annual pilgrimage to cemeteries to honor their departed loved ones, let us remind ourselves to be prepared for activities of the long and busy weekend that lies ahead.

Authorities and previous experience has been telling us to plan our trips early. Highways and bus terminals are expected to be congested, and airports and seaports will likely see heavy traffic as people return to their provinces.

Commuters should anticipate delays, secure their belongings, and remain alert in crowded areas where petty crimes often occur. Those driving to the provinces are urged to inspect their vehicles before departure, and to avoid speeding or drinking before getting behind the wheel, as road crashes can turn what should be a reunion into a tragedy.

Inside the busy cemeteries, basic health and safety measures remain crucial. Pilgrims are advised to stay hydrated, wear comfortable clothing, and protect themselves from heat exhaustion, while at the same time being prepared for inclement weather. Parents should keep a close eye on their children, while senior citizens and those with medical conditions must avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Bringing reusable containers, proper waste bags, and avoiding single-use plastics can also help keep cemeteries clean and lessen the environmental impact of the holiday.

Equally important is maintaining peace and order. The local authorities have deployed security personnel nationwide, but vigilance is a shared responsibility. Cooperation with security protocols such as restrictions on alcohol, loud music, and deadly weapons, ensures that cemeteries remain safe, peaceful, and family-friendly spaces despite the number of people.

This Undas weekend, let our remembrance be marked not by chaos or accidents, but with calm, care, and collective mindfulness. After all, we may be honoring the dead, but our first priority should always be the living.*
