United Negros Alliance secretary Salvador Escalante yesterday raised the possibility that UNegA members may join the newly organized political movement- Kilusan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP), which is applying for accreditation with the Commission on Election as a national political party.

This was the reply of UNegA secretary general Salvador Escalante Jr, the mayor of Cadiz City, when asked if their political group will join KNP, which is headed by Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez.

Escalante recalled that UNegA members were given an option to choose their presidential candidate during the 2022 elections. Rep. Alfredo Marañon III, its chairman, and Escalante supported Leni Robredo while Vice Gov. Jeffrey Ferrer and almost majority of mayors supported Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“Most probably we may adapt the same position to preserve UNegA as a provincial party, with each mayor having its own choice,” Escalante said, although they have to meet and discuss the matter.

But with Mayor Albee in the KNP, “then that changes the discussions,” he added, stressing “we may have a voice in the national government if this body will succeed.”

KNP is perceived to be a pro-administration political movement.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is looking to resolve the accreditation of the KNP by early next month.

Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said the new political party has to submit its memorandum within five days, after which the commission en banc will decide on their application for accreditation.

The petition for accreditation was filed by Mayor Benitez, who is also the party president.

Among the other officials of the party are Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin Abalos Sr., vice president for National Capital Region; Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, secretary general; Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez, vice president for Visayas; and Zamboanga del Sur 1st District Rep. Divina Grace Yu, vice president for Mindanao.

Garcia noted that the Comelec en banc has taken jurisdiction over the petition as there were no oppositions received.*
