UNU-IAS designates CHMSU reg’l center for ESD

The United Nations University – Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) recently granted the application of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University to become the Regional Center of Expertise (RCE) in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), a press release from CHMSU said.

In a letter sent by Jonghwi Park, head of Innovation and Education Programme, CHMSU is now acknowledged as the RCE for Negros Island Region and now a member of the Global RCE Network effective January 10.

“As a university dedicated to promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), CHMSU’s recognition as the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) for Negros Island Region (NIR) marks both a monumental achievement and a profound responsibility,” said Rhoderick Samonte, director for Internationalization and External Relations.

Samonte said this milestone affirms CHMSU’s commitment to fostering sustainability, innovation, and community engagement.

“However, with this recognition comes the immense challenge of continuously advancing impactful programs, strengthening collaborations, and driving meaningful change,” he added.

As the RCE, CHMSU is tasked to ensure the involvement of a diverse range of stakeholders, including government agencies, non-profit organizations (NPOs), private sector representatives, and other relevant parties in the decision-making process of the coordinating committee to be established at the university.

To kick start its role as the newest center in the region, the university will create a detailed implementation plan with clear timelines to promote accountability and the successful execution of initiatives.*
