Victorias City fisherman killed in maritime strafing

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

A fisherman-resident of Victorias City, Negros Occidental, was reportedly killed in an alleged strafing incident on September 3, within the territorial waters of Santa Fe, Bantayan, Cebu province.

Commander Jansen Benjamin, Philippine Coast Guard Northern Negros district chief, said they are investigating the incident which led to the death of a fisherman, whose identity he initially withheld.

Benjamin said the victim and five others were on board a boat, when the incident took place.

Boat captain John Rexel Azuelo, in an interview with RMN DYHB, tagged the suspects as alleged Bantay Dagat members, who flagged them down, and told them they were already within the 12-kilometer prohibited fishing grounds.

Azuela said the victim succumbed to a gunshot injury in the chest.

He added that it was the first time that the victim joined them in their fishing boat.

The fishing boat left Victorias City at noon of Sept. 2, and the alleged strafing incident took place early morning of the next day.

Azuelo further told RMN DYHB that the suspects involved were wearing bonnets, and two of them were armed with long firearms.

He added that the suspects immediately fled, on board their motorboat, after they were informed that one of his crew was hit.

The cadaver of the victim was brought to Madridejos, Cebu.*
