BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Department of Health-Region 6 Center for Health and Development has elevated the Covid-19 risk classification of Western Visayas from moderate to high risk, citing an increase in growth of cases, average daily attack rate (ADAR), and the health care utilization rate (HCUR).

The highly-urbanized city of Bacolod remained in the “high risk” classification, while Negros Occidental was classified as low risk.

Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, DOH-WV CHD medical officer IV, in the “Isyung Bakuna” online program yesterday, said that the ADAR, or the number of cases in an area per 100,000 population for a 14-day period, has increased to 7.12 cases in the last two weeks, from 5.67 cases in the previous 28 days.

An ADAR over 7 is considered high, based on the DOH framework.

The ADAR of Bacolod City rose from 13.95 to 20.16 per 100,000 population, with an 85.77-percent HCUR, and growth in cases of 45 percent.

The Region 6 HCUR, or the rate on the use of beds and mechanical ventilators, also increased to 66.29 percent, from 63.37 percent on June 5. But this rate is still in the “moderate” column, based on the DOH framework.

The Western Visayas positivity rate has also increased to 7.7 percent on June 13, from 7.3 percent on June 5.

Meanwhile, there has been a decrease in the 2-week growth rate at 25 percent in the last 14 days, from 39.60 percent in the last 28 days, the DOH data show.

The 2WGR refers to the percentage rate of growth in Covid cases over a 14-day period, and 2WGRs between 0 and 200 percent are considered “moderate”.

The ADAR, HCUR, and 2WGR are taken into consideration by the DOH in recommending the community quarantine status of an area.

As to foreign Covid-19 variants, Natalaray said they are still awaiting confirmation from the Philippine Genome Center in Quezon City. She added that cases of foreign variants last week involved overseas Filipino workers and locally stranded individuals from Iloilo province, Antique, Iloilo City, and Negros Occidental, who have since recovered.*
