What Hidilyn did

Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

“She’s HOME”. I am writing this just as the news was flashed on TV that our first Olympic gold medalist, Hidilyn Diaz, was announced to be on her way back to the Philippines gifting her country with the much longed-for medal in the international competition where it has eluded our athletes, I believe, for almost a hundred years! And for this, we credit a petite Pinay, who astounded Olympic audiences by hoisting no less than 347 pounds! Viva, Hidilyn! We are all proud of you!

***

From hereon, we can hope for more achievers of Olympian caliber, inspired by the feat of Hidilyn. I hope the boys are not feeling sore that a female beat them to the gold and gained worldwide acclaim for it. Don’t be jealous, boys. Take a cue from Hidilyn  and try harder to excel in sports, whatever kind you believe is your forte, and pray  and hope for another one for our country soon. Be inspired by what she has accomplished, that has brought distinction, not only to her and her family, but, most of all to our gold-starved country!

I couldn’t help laughing when it was stressed –and repeated several times, too — that the first food she asked for was pizza. She must have international tastes, this champion. I think, other athletes will show a preference for pizza from now on. But how proud Pinoys would have been if she has asked for puto or bibingka (which I know are not available there) to emphasize her Pinay taste. But it’s all right, what does her food preference matter when she has brought such pride and joy to her fellow Pinoys?

***

And her fellow Filipinos were quick to acknowledge and reward her for her accomplishment. So far, I hear that she has already received some P35 million not only as prize, but also gifts from admirers who could not get over their joy at having our country seize its first Olympic gold. That is no mean feat, and, so for the boys, maybe your turn will come next. I hear that Hidilyn trained in Malaysia, so I hope our other athletes will also seek training from wherever  there are specialists in their fields. But let this not be our one and only Olympic gold – let it only be the first of several more!

While we are rejoicing over the achievements of some of our compatriots, let us also commiserate  with those who have been unfortunate enough to catch this COVID virus that seems to have mutated into another variant medical people have named “Delta”. And since the media is also full of warnings against its transmitability, do be careful about the company you keep, aside from your own family, of course. It seems this COVID, that China has passed on to other countries, does not have plans of going away soon, so let us observe all the so-called “protocols” that could help us avoid it.

By the way, I came upon an item that revealed Hidilyn Diaz’s profession, and found out that she is a member of the Philippine Air Force! Wow! No wonder she has such high ambitions! Well, the PAF officials were not wanting in acknowledging her accomplishment, I also heard that she has been promoted in rank. Well, she deserves it, and this should be an incentive to others in the military forces to also try to excel in other areas related to their jobs, and gain honors for their company.

Suddenly, people have started talking politics, and among the tandems expected to come up is the one headed by Senator Richard Gordon and Vice President LeniRobredo. Me, I’m not showing my hand this early, but I do acknowledge that theirs would be a very workable tandem. As to who else are lining up, it is still not widely known, but we do know that President Duterte does not seem too eager  to stay on the job himself. Maybe daughter Sara is interested? I don’t know, though, if Pinoys voters will go for what would seem like a  succession of power. But then, who knows? And who are the others trying to get in line, too?

***

I heard the news but couldn’t believe it. Is it true that Sen. Richard Gordon has been stricken with the COVID? Oh no! Not when Pinoys have dreams for him, like that tandem with LeniRobredo. Anyway, Covid is scary, but not incurable, as many have recovered from it, so let us pray for our officials who are stricken – I mean the good and honest ones, of course – and let the scoundrels pray for themselves. Oh, and is it true that our country  had also won an Olympic gold in 1924? If so, I apologize for believing Hidilyn’s  was the first. All the same, that was still a historic feat, and took 97 years to duplicate!*
