When loyalty is misplaced

Like any other oil consumers, I felt very happy when I read a headline saying that oil prices  had been rolled back. Alas, my excitement turned to disappointment when the next announcement said the rollback was only five centavos for diesel and 10 centavos for gasoline! Well, that is better than nothing, and at least, it was not an increase we were stuck with. I am sure many other consumers feel the way I do about such “roll backs”.

The report that moves are ongoing for the impeachment of ex-president Donald Trump are ongoing in the United States puzzled me. Hasn’t he been ousted from office already, with Joe Biden now taking his place? Seems I am quite ignorant about their system, and I’m glad  another report later said that being impeached means he cannot hope to return to the presidency again. I think Trump was a victim of COVID – not that he was stricken by the disease, but his lack of proper attention to the pandemic that also hit his country was what did him in.

But it looks as if other American politicians still prioritize their political ties over the good of the people. A news item reported that Republican members of the Senate and House have rejected Biden’s relief plan for the COVID, especially the new variant that has been identified. Isn’t that a selfish way of responding to plans for the benefit of the people, even if the proponent belongs to a different party? Let us see what their reaction will be in case the new variant spreads further and affects more than the previous one.

Indeed, it seems true what some Americans have been quoted as saying to their media. They said Trump never said anything about plans against the pandemic or taken action to conquer it. For that matter, what accomplishments can they credit him with? If it is true that the riot at the capitol had been instigated by him, then he may face more serious  charges than just being impeached. Anyway, there is doubt that he can ever return to the White House, because his removal from office took care of that.

As for the  new COVID variant. Let us all pray and take care that we and our loved ones are spared from it because, according to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, where it  already has some victims, it is more deadly than the original one. But let us pray that our own leaders will not let politics interfere with any  plans from an opposing political party to help address this virus that has been spreading so quickly around the world. I heard that Republicans are rejecting the plans of the new President, Joe Biden, for a relief plan for their country that would cost some $17.9 TRILLION!

***

If, indeed, that proposal of Biden is rejected, and COVID cases continue to increase, then The Republicans may find out  in the next election how much their non-cooperation will cost them. This pandemic should teach all leaders, whether of the wealthiest countries or the poorer ones, that they must not prioritize their decisions when it comes to the welfare of their people. This pandemic is not only affecting the economic wellfare of countries affected, but their health and lives, too.

Meanwhile, President Duterte has announced plans to buy a new helicopter for government use. Isn’t this a bad time to be talking about choppers when we have just experienced a fatal accident involving one recently? And with the weather now so unpredictable, should helicopters be prioritized? Well, I am speaking this way because I admit to being “acrophobic”,  meaning I have fear  of flying . The only thing that made me endure long flights was my love for traveling that has brought me to so many parts of the world. But I’m not telling anybody how many rosaries I prayed during flights!

***

This is something for hardcore political supporters. Remember that riot at the capitol in Washington where five persons were killed? Several suspects  have been identified and charged, and now they are facing no less than 20 years imprisonment if found guilty. Will the politicians  they supported be able to help them? Can they hope to be pardoned because of their support and willingness to kill in their behalf? That is very doubtful, and I hope our own loyalists will remember that when election time comes in our own country.*
