World AIDS Day reso passed

BY CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO

A resolution declaring the observance of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 and enjoining all departments and agencies for support and participation, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod during its regular session yesterday.

Authored by Councilor Claudio Puentevella, the resolution said that according to the World Health Organization, there are already about 34 million people living with AIDS from all ages as of 2010, with 1.8 million reported deaths around the world.

World AIDS Day brings together people from around the world to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic, it said.

Each year, during the commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1, people around the world unite to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses, the resolution said.

This year’s theme “Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility” joins a growing list of challenges that World AIDS Day has alerted people to globally, it said.

The day is an opportunity for public and private partners to spread awareness on the status of the pandemic and encourage progress in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in high prevalence countries and around the world, the resolution added.*
