WV crime drops 11.68% in 6 months

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Crime incidents in Western Visayas dropped by 11.68 percent in the first six months of this year, compared to the same period of 2023.

The Police Regional Office 6 logged 5,529 incidents from January to June this year, compared to 6,260 last year.

During the first half of 2024, the index crimes were logged at 1,095, which is a decrease of 339 or equivalent to 23.64 percent lower compared to the same period of 2023, which recorded 1,434.

For non-index crimes, 4,434 cases were registered this year, compared to 4,826 in the same period of 2023, registering a decrease of 392 incidents, equivalent to 8.12 percent.

Index crimes are considered serious in nature, such as murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft and carnapping, while non index crimes are implementation of special laws, such as campaign against illegal drugs, gambling, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal logging and fishing.

PBrig. Gen. Jack Wanky, regional police director of Western Visayas, attributed the reduction of crime incidents to the collective efforts of the police, local government units, the community, and other stakeholders that contributed to the decreasing trend of crime incidents in the region.

“The police cannot do it alone. We achieved this because of your support and contributions. It is our goal that this descending trend will continue.” Wanky, in a statement, said.*
