WV dengue death toll now 8, cases almost 3,000

The dengue death toll in Western Visayas has further risen to eight, as the Department of Health in Region 6 logged 2,933 cases, as of May 18.

From May 12 to 18, DOH Western Visayas Center for Health Development (WV CHD) recorded two dengue related deaths in Negros Occidental and Aklan provinces.

Dengue cases in the region rose from 2,498 during the period of January to May 18 in 2023, to 2,933 for the same period of this year, registering an increase of 17 percent.

Iloilo province had the highest number of dengue cases at 913 with three deaths, followed by Aklan with 481 cases and one death, Negros Occidental at 410 with three deaths, Capiz at 395 with one death, Antique 227 cases, highly urbanized Iloilo City with 215 cases, Guimaras with 151 cases, while 141 cases were recorded in highly urbanized Bacolod City.

DOH WV CHD also noted an increase in dengue attack rate in provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo and Guimaras this year, compared to the same period in 2023.

It also reported that 12 barangays in Western Visayas have clustering of dengue cases.*
