Former Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco yesterday issued conflicting signals regarding his political plans in Kabankalan City, for 2025.
Zayco, who attended the turnover ceremony of animal dispersal project by the provincial government led by Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, in Brgy. Dancalan, Ilog, said in a speech that he may seek the mayoralty post of Kabankalan, if pushed by his constituents.
However, in an interview with the local media after his speech, which lasted for more than eight minutes, Zayco debunked insinuations that he will run again as mayor of Kabankalan City, as he dismissed his earlier statement before the crowd, as a plain and simple “joke.”
Zayco, who retired from politics in 2019, had been in the public service for 32 years, as a board member, vice governor, governor, and mayor of Kabankalan City.
Incumbent Kabankalan City Mayor Benjie Miranda earlier said that he is not bothered by reports that former Mayor Isidro Zayco may run against him in the 2025 mid-term elections.
Miranda, a former Army soldier turned barangay official, defeated Pedro Zayco, brother of Isidro, in the 2022 elections.*
