Zayco stepping down as NPC provincial chairman

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Since he is now an ordinary civilian and no longer in the government service, former governor Isidro Zayco wants to give up the provincial chairmanship of the Nationalist People’s Coalition in Negros Occidental.

Zayco said he wants to turn over the position to NPC members who are incumbent officials, namely Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, Representative Mercedes Alvarez (6th district, Negros Occidental), or Rep. Gerardo Valmayor (1st district).

He however stressed that he will remain with NPC as a member.

Zayco has reportedly been eyeing a return as mayor of Kabankalan City. He, however, did not confirm it, adding that it will be known in October, during the filing of Certificate of Candidacy.

His brother, Pedro Zayco, was defeated by Benjie Miranda, a former soldier turned politician, during the 2022 Kabankalan City mayoral race.

Asked if being a fellow NPC member, she will support Zayco, Rep. Alvarez said that the former mayor has yet to hear from the former governor if the latter will run as mayor of Kabankalan City, in the elections next year.*
