Only for shooting

Wouldn’t that incident have landed in the popular items of Ripley? Remember that guy who became famous with his “Believe it or not” cartoons? This came to mind after hearing and watching reports on the death of a woman called Breonna Taylor in the United States. Three police officers were charged for her death, but only one was indicted. And not for killing, but only for the shooting! Can you blame her family being virtually up in arms over that decision? Now protests are building up, and it seems that the United States is no longer the land of the free and the brave, but a land of protests.

So what was the real cause of her death? Did she have a heart attack after seeing the cops point their guns at her? Was an autopsy conducted that gave that as the cause of her demise? This is truly one for the books, as punsters would call it, but what can the family of Breonna Taylor do? Is it true that they have agreed to a settlement? If so, did it include the one policemen who seemed to be the fall guy? Well, at least, Trump’s opponent, Joe Biden, seems to be safe and free to do his campaign.

In Russia, someone poisoned the leader of the opposition, but luckily for him, he survived it, and I think that would even increase his chances. I wonder, however, why no suspect has been named in the reports so far. Luckily for us, election is still far away, and the incumbent, as well as aspirants for the top positions can still relax. But since this poisoning case is not the first to be recorded among politicians and incumbent officials recently, those aspiring for offices must be extra careful about what they are served outside of their own homes.

Meanwhile, it must be good news to those who have been itching to go on vacations in our country’s beautiful tourist spots and I hear that Boracay, undoubtedly our most popular, has reportedly announced that it will open on October 1. I can hardly wait to see the response to that announcement. Will our fun-loving residents and foreign fans of Boracay be flooding there at the start of next month? Even if, by then, there has been no assurance yet that the country, and its tourist spots are all free of the coronavirus already? Oh, by the way, is there any study showing that coronavirus can be killed by sea water?

It was very good news announcing that Philippine Cardinal Luis Tagle, who was reported to be among the victims of the COVID-19 about a week ago, has been declared negative of the virus the other day. I am sure hundreds, maybe thousands or more of Catholics all over the country, and even in Rome, must have been storming the heavens with prayers for his recovery. Now that be has recovered, I am sure he will be praying more than over for the conquest of this disease that has already been raging for almost eight months now.

Is it true that the parents of Donald Trump left him a million dollars when they died? Oh, how much have those millions grown since then? What about Joe Biden? There have been no reports about him getting any inheritance. So he could be what they call a self-made man? But that alone is no assurance that Americans will pick him for their president. I suppose he has supporters among the Democrats who are backing him, while Trump only needs votes when he campaigns.

I was surprised to hear that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under fire for allegedly imposing too many restrictions that people consider “tough” and even “breaches of rules”. But wasn’t Johnson himself a survivor of the COVID 19? If it is on that issue that he seems very strict, who can blame him? No has, as some people like to say “been there, done that”. They may even find his strictness to their advantage, that is, if he is adding to their health and not something else.

I am sure a lot of people, not only Pinoys, admired President Duterte for his no holds barred speech before the United Nations on the subject of the South China Sea that has been a bone of contention between our two countries for some time now. I think, however, that previous administrations did not encounter that problem because we had always believed that the area belongs to us. Until China probably discovered the substance and potential of the area. I really congratulate our president for not pussy-putting over the issue, and giving it to them point-blank, by telling them that he is bringing the matter to the United Nations. Let us pray for his and that his efforts will bring justice to our country at last.*
