The Provincial Sports Office has teamed up with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Inc. (SBP) to conduct a basketball elite camp for young Negrense hoopers in the Province of Negros Occidental this June, an initiative of the Abanse Negrense Sports Programs spearheaded by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.
According to Provincial Sports Coordinator and Provincial SBP Director Anthony Carlo Agustin, boy and girl campers under 16 years old will participate in the Abanse Negrense Basketball Elite Camp. The training program will be divided into four parts, including combined training, kids’ clinic, scrimmages, and the coaches’ seminar.
The participants will be subjected to agility and speed tests, drills like documented shooting, ball handling and passing, as well as scrimmages. Also, the camp will feature a 2-hour coaches’ seminar based on preferred topics such as basketball structure, concept, and play.
The Basketball Elite Camp will be conducted by San Beda University Red Lions Basketball Team Consultant Coach Norman Black and Ateneo Women’s Basketball Team Coach Bacon Austria. Apart from the elite camp, SBP Executive Director Erika Caitlin Dy emphasized her hopes to unify the sport of basketball in the country.
During the meeting held in Iloilo on May 1, attended by Agustin, Black, SBP Region 6 Director Robert Uy, Bong Palo, and other invited guests, Dy also highlighted her plans to promote SBP’s grassroots programs and the “one brand of play” concept, stressing that SBP is moving towards the “one direction, one goal” strategy.
Meanwhile, SBP Region 6 is gearing up for the 3X3 Regional Finals in Iloilo on June 8-9. Twenty teams (U-16 boys’ and girls’ category) are set to participate in the tournament, with five teams coming from Negros Occidental.
There will also be an Iloilo Elite Camp on May 29-30, while the Negros leg under the Abanse Negrense sports program is set in June.*
