The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines Cebu Chapter has condemned the killing of radio blocktimer Renante “Rey” Cortes of DYRB-Cebu yesterday.

Cortes was killed by still unidentified gunmen on board a motorcycle outside the radio station located in Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu at around 9 a.m.

“NUJP Cebu condemns the killing of Cortes and fervently demands justice for his death. We call for a swift and partial investigation into the incident,” the group’s Cebu chairperson, Lorraine Ecarma, said in a statement.

She lamented that attacks against journalists and media workers continue to rise simply for fulfilling their duties as watchdogs of the society.

Cortes was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center but he was declared dead on arrival. He was shot in the chest, and the bullet went through his left arm.

According to NUJP-Cebu, this was the second time an attempt was made on the life of Cortes.*PNA
