An earthquake measuring 4.1-magnitude jolted southern Negros shortly before yesterday, a report of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tremor that struck at 11:58 a.m. originated 18 kilometers northwest of Sipalay City in Negros Occidental.

Phivolcs said the 4.1-magnitude quake was strongly felt at Intensity V in Sipalay City and Cauayan City, Negros Occidental, and moderately strong at Intensity IV in Hinobaan.

Intensity 3 was also felt in Bago City, Negros Occidental, Bayawan City in Negros Oriental, as well as Iloilo City and Jordan town in Guimaras.

Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) head Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian reported that the epicenter of the earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, was about 18 kilometers northeast of Sipalay City.

Caelian stressed that there is nothing to be alarmed with, as the tremor is only part of the normal movement of the Negros Trench which is located in Sipalay City and Hinobaan town.*
