Rebel killed in gunbattle

A suspected member of the New People’s Army died yesterday in an encounter with Army soldiers and policemen in Sitio Tamusi, Brgy. Talalak, Santa Catalina, Negros Oriental.

A joint operation of the Army’s 11th Infantry Battalion, 705th Regional Mobile Force Company and the Santa Catalina police led to the death of an unidentified rebel, whose cadaver was left behind by his fleeing comrades.

A report from the 11th Infantry Battalion said that a K9 assault rifle with a magazine containing 20 ammunition, two magazines of M16 rifle and a .45 caliber pistol with11 ammunition, two Baofeng VHF radios and a backpack containing subversive documents were recovered from the encounter site.

No casualty was reported on the government side after the gunbattle that lasted about eight minutes.

Pursuit operations are ongoing as of press time.*
