Silliman University, through the Culture and Arts Council (CAC), is set to host a national music and culture summit that aims to convene music leaders and practitioners from various fields of music in the Philippines on May 15-17.

With the theme, “Gasa sa Kinaiyahan ug Kabilin,” the Philippine Music and Culture Summit is designed to identify ways in which music and culture can build bridges and promote positive change.

Dr. Diomar Abrio, chairperson of the CAC, observed that many young people, especially in highly urbanized cities, have limited exposure to local and traditional arts and music, and are now heavily influenced by popular songs streaming from different music platforms. He said that the summit can serve as an avenue to discuss and generate new strategies and initiatives to help sustain local culture.

“The music summit hopes to start discussions with key participants from different sectors to come up with creative solutions and new strategies. It seeks to formulate policy recommendations and ideas on cultural responsibility in our local music industries and society in the 21st century,” Abrio said.

The summit will feature a series of panel presentations, performances, and workshops that will engage participants in discourses about the role of music and culture in improving the world.

Among the keynote speakers during the summit are National Artists for Music Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and Dr. Ramon Santos, National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, Prof. Felipe de Leon Jr., Dr. Renato Lucas, Dr. Joel Navarro, Dr. Elizabeth Susan Vista-Suarez, and Dr. Ed Manguiat.

The event is co-presented by the Friends of the Environment in Negros Oriental in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Professional teachers attending the event will be given 15 Continuing Professional Development points.
