The Provincial Health Office logged 32 deaths due to leptospirosis in Negros Occidental, from January to December 10 this year, compared to 11 in the same period in 2021.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can infect people exposed to the urine of infected animals. They can also get infected from water, soil, or food contaminated with infected animal urine, according to the Department of Health.
Leptospirosis cases in Negros Occidental also increased from 76 in 2021, to 228 this year.
Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, jaundice (yellow eyes and skin), red eyes, and skin rash.
Leptospirosis is treated with antibiotics.*
