An alleged leader of the New People’s Army, who participated in the ambush and encounter with policemen in Calatrava, Negros Occidental, gave himself up to the 79th Infantry Battalion, on March 17.

According to a statement issued by the 79th Infantry Battalion, the NPA leader who surrendered, whose identity was withheld for security reasons, served as a vice squad leader and intelligence officer of Squad 1, Sentro De Grabidad Platoon (SDG) of the dismantled Northern Negros Front.

The 79IB said that the surrendered rebel leader is a close associate of the elusive and most wanted NPA leader Roger Favillar, with aliases of Arnel Tapang, Jhong, Nono and Domeng, whose group was responsible for a series of killings in the hinterlands of Calatrava and Toboso.

A cash bounty of P1 million is being offered by the government for the arrest of Favillar.

The ambush and encounter in Sitio Icogan, Brgy. Minapasuk, Calatrava on August 9 last year, claimed the life of a policeman and injuries of two others.*
