Despite declaration of World Health Organization that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a global health emergency, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson is not taking chances, as he rallied Negrenses to remain vigilant and wear face masks.

“This is a positive development but just the same COVID-19 can be treated as an endemic still present in our country. Vigilance is prudent. Use of facemasks is beneficial,” Lacson said.

Lacson attributed the recent increase of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines “as a result of the opening up” of health protocols.

As of May 6, Negros Occidental logged 91 active cases, as reported by the Provincial Incident Management Team, with nine deaths logged from January this year, until now, according to reports of the Provincial Health Office.

Lacson also called on the public, especially the unvaccinated “to consider getting vaccinated.”

PHO officer-in-charge Dr. Girlie Pinongan confirmed the arrival of Pfizer vaccines, for use in the booster shots of vaccinated individuals.

Pinongan, however, said they have yet to be informed by the Department of Health on the volume of vaccines to be received by Negros Occidental.*
