Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Trust it to the Filipino to find a means to observe what they are used to do, despite warnings that such things are prohibited. When it was announced that cemeteries and memorial parks will be closed on November 1 and 2, which are regularly observed, not only Catholics, but by people of all faiths, there is now news that many families who insisted on observing the days as they usually do, have now prepared ladders to climb over that gate or walls of burial sites, to visit the graves of their departed loved ones!

***

I heard, however, that several families have already prepared ladders that they will climb over the walls, or even the gates of the cemeteries and parks where their loved ones lie. I also heard that the police will be looking out for those enterprising ones and removing the ladders as quickly as they are installed. However, the departed ones will understand if they cannot make it on the usual days. So, why not visit the graves of your beloved dead days before the prohibited time?

***

I am sure your loved ones will understand if you don’t show up on November 1 or 2. In fact you will also reach them by having masses or novenas for the days before the usual dates. And now that is supposed to be prohibited, let us not flaunt the order by climbing over walls which could break down and hasten your schedule for joining them there! Let us be reasonable about this, because this pandemic will not hold its horses for anyone, whether it is the day for the dead or not.

Meanwhile, we should all give thanks that vaccines against this COVID are already available and that our city and province are doing their best to acquire enough of the stuff to make it available to all our people. I only hope that there are no superstitious or cowardly ones who will hide from the medical staff administering the vaccines. In this day and age our medical people and scientists are leaving no stone unturned to find a way to protect and save us from diseases like COVID, which is an entirely new challenge for science and medicine.

***

Isn’t it surprising that in this day and age, there are still people who fear, and refuse to undergo vaccination? Don’t they realize that, so far, no “magic” cure for this pandemic has been found? It seems that the vaccine against it has been working, but there are some who still doubt its efficacy. Well, government medics and their staff cannot drag them to vaccination sites, but I think barangay officials can be the best teams in trying to convince doubters to undergo it.

***

All they have to do is remind their constituents about diseases that used to attack our people in the past like tuberculosis, leprosy, and so many others formerly noted to be “killers” have been controlled, and rare, indeed, are the victims of such diseases now. Parents, especially, should take the initiative to have their children vaccinated. Schools have not fully opened yet so not all children who could exposed to the virus may be reached by vaccination teams provided by the government. So parents and guardians should take the initiative in this.

***

I have not kept up with the latest on the news that our government is expecting to acquire more vaccines to be administered to our people. I hope their plans include school children with vaccines administered in their schools where they can see their classmates bravely undergoing it. That is because some parents may not comply with such requirement if the responsibility is left to them. It was also reported that the purchase of vaccines is being taken up by the Senate. I hope they will not take their sweet time discussing or arguing over it, until the cases become unmanageable already.

***

The latest I heard was that the purchase of vaccines is being taken up by the Senate. Well, I hope they will not spend so much time debating over it so that suffers from this plague may experience relief! I’m sure scientists and medical specialists are doing their best to conquer it, and while we cannot do anything to aid them, let us pray that they will be enlightened and inspired to hasten the discovery of a cure for it the way medics in the past have conquer other epidemics and pandemics. Let us all pray that they will inspire to succeed in dealing with this new one, too.*
