Grid operator National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) yesterday placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert, as 13 power plants are on forced outage, while five others are running on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 698MW unavailable to the grid.

In an advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert started from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. on April 17.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. It does not necessarily lead to power outages.

According to NGCP, the available capacity in Visayas is 2,713MW, as opposed to peak demand of 2,523 MW.

On the other hand, Mayor Miguel Peña has announced that regular classes in all public and private schools in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, will start 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., from April 19 to 30.

Schools will assign alternative, distance modular learning plans for the afternoon sessions, Pena said in an advisory issued by the Pulupandan municipal government, following a consultation with local school heads, citing the extreme heat as the reason.

He also prohibited all outdoor school activities.*
