BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Negros Occidental logged 34 new COVID- 19 cases, increasing the total cases to 121, with two deaths, as of August 3, according to a report of the Provincial Incident Management Team.

The PIMT also reported 13 recoveries yesterday.

Provincial Inter Agency Task Force action officer Rayfrando Diaz, however said that the admission of COVID-19 patients remains low at its treatment facility, the Cadiz District Hospital.

Diaz said the Cadiz District Hospital (CDH) has a 30-bed capacity for COVID-19 patients, currently with 15 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 16 suspected cases.

The COVID-19 treatment facility is located at the CDH annex building, which is separate from the main hospital building where all other non-COVID patients are receiving treatment.

Asked if the active cases are just the “tip of the iceberg,” Diaz said their “real barometer” is to check COVID-patients who need hospitalization, noting that some patients no longer require hospitalization.

He stressed that the COVID-19 situation in Negros Occidental is not bad, and it will only become a concern if the patients start going to the hospital to seek medical attention.

On the other hand, the Department of Health-Western Visayas also reported 206 new COVID-19 cases in Region 6, bringing the total cases to 2,103 as of Aug. 3.

Among the six provinces and two highly-urbanized cities of the region, Iloilo province logged the greatest number of cases at 956.

Bacolod City also logged 18 new cases yesterday, DOH-WV reports also said.

On the other hand, Diaz said that the provincial government of Negros Occidental is ready for the reopening of its quarantine facility in the event that it will have a case of monkeypox.

The Department of Health (DOH) has detected the first confirmed case of Monkeypox in the country which infected a 31-year-old Filipino, who arrived from abroad on July 19.*
