BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday called the country’s COVID-19 frontliners “the epitome of modern day heroism” as the nation marked National Heroes’ Day.

“We know that you are exhausted and even fearful, but despite that, you continue to persevere,” he said.

In the words of Winston Churchill, “Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision”, Lacson said, pointing out that the courage and self sacrifice of the frontliners is the highest form of homage “our present society can offer to all those who sacrificed and fought for us in the past.”

For the first time, he said the nation marks National Heroes Day in the thick of a global health crisis.

“Today, as we are in this new crisis, in this new struggle, our society needs a new breed of heroes, with the same degree of loyalty and devotion to purpose, as shown by our heroes of the past,” he said.

To all the Negrenses, Lacson said “it is our obligation to our heroes of the past and to our frontliners to give back in gratitude, not in words but through our actions by being conscientious, active and responsible members of our community, particularly in this time where self discipline and self control are the most effective tools that we can equip ourselves with against an unseen virus.”*
