Province hosts national ranking archery tournament

The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, through its Abanse Negrense Sports Programs, hosted the 2024 Archery Grassroots Development Program Leg 1, a ranking event in preparation for upcoming international tournaments this year.

The tournament, held in collaboration with the World Archery Philippines (WAP), a recognized National Sports Association of the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, was at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium on March 7-10.

Prior to the tournament proper, a judging and officiating seminar was held from March 4-7.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson led the opening ceremony, giving an inspirational message and declaring the tournament officially open. The governor, who was joined by Provincial Sports Coordinator Anthony Carlo Agustin and WAP Secretary-General Rosendo “Dondon” Sombrio, also took a shot at the target board during the ceremonial shoot, scoring a perfect 10. Alon Jucutan of the Philippine National Team took the lead during the Oath of Sportsmanship.

A total of 148 archers from 30 archery clubs participated in the tournament. It included AP Bowhol Archery Club (Bohol), Archetto Archery Club, Baguio City Archery Club, Barotac Viejo Archery Club (Iloilo Province), Bayawan City Archery Club, Bullzeye Archery Club (Iloilo City), Cebu Archery Club, Ceres Archery Club (Bacolod City), Davao Archery Club, Inc., Dumaguete Archery Center, Inc., Floba Archery Center (Cotabato), Lapu Lapu City Archery, Lorma Archery Club, MACO Davao De Oro Archery Club, Mandaue City Archery (Cebu), Manila Polo Club, Merto Archery and SURSAT (Dumaguete), Nueva Ecija Archery Club Collective (NEAC), Olympus Archery Philippines (Marikina), Pana Archery Philippines (Manila), Pasig Archery Club, Pines City Archery Club (Baguio), Stars and Arrows Archery Academy (Dumaguete), Siliman University Archery (Dumaguete), Tangent Archery Guild – LLC (Lapu Lapu City), Udyong Archery Club of Bacnotan (La Union), United Negrense Archery Club (BCD – Neg. Occ.), University of Baguio Cardinals Archery Club (Baguio City), University of the Philippines Archery Club (Manila), and Xavier Archery Club (Manila).

The tournament featured the following categories or events – U-10, U-13, and U-15 Boys and Girls Recurve; U-18 and U-21 Men and Women Recurve; U-18 Men and Women Compound; and U-21 Men and Women Compound.

The 2024 Archery Grassroots Development Program Leg 1 is part of the sports programs spearheaded by Gov. Bong Lacson as the provincial government recognizes the significance of sports in advancing societies. Through these initiatives, Gov. Lacson hopes to make bigger strides in incorporating sports activities into provincial strategies for sustainable development.*
