Ultimate Frisbee champion, Bacolodnon Carl Jeremy Nayon, paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, at the Bacolod City Government Center, on September 2, accompanied by Maolen Ronzales and Leo Balatayo, The Mascobados team manager.
Nayon, of Barangay Estefania, is a member of the Philippine national team that was hailed as champion in the Thailand Ultimate Invitational Tournament at Rajamala University of Technology, Nakhon Pathom Province of Thailand, on August 28.
He is the only player to represent Bacolod City in the national team that bested players from Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand, and won with a 13-6 score against Malaysia in the final match.
Nayon spent three weeks of training in Manila before flying to Thailand for the tournament.
“Nervousness has started to settle in minutes before my first game because all the hard work and preparation boils down at that moment,” Nayon shared. “But I am grateful for my teammates who have relentlessly boosted me, so I was able to overcome that feeling,” he added.
Nayon has been playing Ultimate Frisbee for eight years and he is currently a member of Philippine Ultimate National Team and The Mascobados, a local Frisbee team in Bacolod City.
The 24-year-old said that “Ultimate Frisbee is not merely hurling and catching a disc, it is the spirit of the game — building honesty, fair-mindedness, and sportsmanship — was the reason why I am strongly invested with the sport since its nature is self-officiated or has no referee.”
He added that they are willing to teach Ultimate Frisbee to everyone who is interested.
On September 23, they will conduct a clinic for beginners who want to learn basics of the sport and on September 24 and 25, The Mascobados and the Philippine Disc Flying Association will be hosting the 9th Ultimate Smile Tournament at the La Provincia Club, Bantug Field in Alangilan, Bacolod City.
Over 300 participants and spectators from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will participate in the tournament.*
