Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said that financial assistance of P4 million will be given to selected hog raisers by the Department of Social Welfare and Development through its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

As of June 1, the damage to the Negros Occidental hog industry breached the P100 million mark, as local government units come to the rescue of affected swine raisers.

Records of the Provincial Veterinary Office showed that swine diseases have already affected 1,697 hog raisers all over the province, with pig deaths from hog cholera and other illnesses in 14 towns and cities further rising to 8,849.

Lacson said they are looking at giving P2,000 per hog raiser, although he admitted that cash assistance may not be enough for all.

The local government units of San Enrique and Bago City, are considering to give P3,000 to P5,000 to affected hog raisers.

Lacson disclosed that the financial assistance to be given by the province is an “augmentation” to the assistance given by LGUs to affected hog raisers.

Swine deaths in Negros Occidental presently consists of 8.15 percent of the hog population of Negros Occidental.

The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Industry earlier confirmed the detection of the deadly African Swine Fever (ASF) virus in Brgys. Taculing and Tangub in Bacolod City, and Brgy. Mabini in Pulupandan, all in Negros Occidental, along with the towns of Dauin and Sibulan in Negros Oriental.

In his meeting with DA Region 6 director Jose Albert Barogo, Lacson said he gave assurance that the provincial government is strictly following BAI protocols in addressing the swine diseases.

Asked if Pulupandan will be declared as a “red zone” following the detection of an ASF case, Lacson said only one of the four hogs tested returned a positive result.

Just the same, he added that Mayor Miguel Peña ordered the culling of hogs within a 500-meter radius of ground zero in Brgy. Mabini, Pulupandan.*
