BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Two suspects on a motorcycle shot and killed a member of the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap, a militant urban poor organization, in Brgy. Mambulac, Silay City, Negros Occidental on Thursday.

The police said that Jesus Pason Jr., 33, was driving a tricycle, with a woman passenger, when he was shot. He sustained a gunshot wound in the back of his head and was declared dead on arrival at the Teresita Lopez Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City.

The suspects fled on board an orange motorcycle, while an empty shell of a .45 caliber pistol was recovered at the crime scene.

Human rights Karapatan-Negros secretary general, Clarissa Singson, issued a statement yesterday and strongly condemned the killing of Pason, who, she said, was a member of Kadamay-Negros, and of the Pasil Homeowners Association Inc.

KILLING FIELD?

Singson said the issuance of Memorandum Order 32 and an executive order by President Rodrigo Duterte has long since turned Negros Island into a bloody killing field, and the Anti-Terrorism Law has intensified the death sentence on human rights defenders and community organizers in the region.*
