Labor advocate Wennie Sancho yesterday said he believes that a night market will be economically feasible in a sense that many have no jobs and the people’s purchasing power has eroded.

Sancho was reacting to the proposed night market along Ballesteros Street in Bacolod City which the Sangguniang Panlungsod has authorized on an experimental basis, upon the request of the RTW and Retailers of Metro Bacolod Association, Inc., led by its president Shiela Versoza.

The implementation of the experimental night market, which started on June 17, will be held every Friday to Sunday from 4.p.m. to 10 p.m. for two weeks.

Sancho said that with the increase of wages, the establishment of a night market will hopefully be viable, not only to provide people with additional income but also provide them with items that may not be brand new but can still be useful.

“I am encouraging new entrepreneurs. It’s a long time coming that there would be a place for a night market, wet market or sidewalk vendors to help pump prime the economy. Without it, the economy will have no support and that people with jobs can participate in what is called consumer spending, so there will be circulation of money,” he said.

Livelihoods will increase and economic opportunities will be enhanced in order to combat joblessness, inflation and economic recession with the establishment of a night market and other similar venues for business opportunities, Sancho added.*
