A sexagenarian man surrendered to the police at about 11 p.m. Wednesday after he shot dead his son in an apparent case of self defense in Murcia town, Negros Occidental
P/Captain Gerald Muya, officer-in charge of Murcia town police, identified the suspect as Sambida Duran, 63, of Brgy. Pandanon Silos while the victim was identified as Joemarie Duran, 41.
Investigation showed that the younger Duran, armed with a bolo tried to barge into their house and wanted to attack his family but was stopped by his father,
He then fled from their house, climbed their fence and subsequently attempted to hack his father, who was left with no choice but to shoot him hitting his head. The younger Duran was brought to the Murcia Health Unit but died while being treated.
Muya said that the victim had been living alone in a makeshift room for some time now because he was reportedly suffering from a mental illness. In fact, the family was supposed to bring him to a mental hospital but did not push through with it, he said.
The .357 caliber revolver loaded with five ammunitions used by the suspect in shooting his son his son and the victim’s bolo are now in police custody.
Muya said that they are waiting for the decision of the family if they will file parricide charges against the elder Duran, otherwise, they will set him free from detention after 72 hours.*
