The Larry Alcala: Slices of Life, Wit, and Humor – Travelling Exhibition 2023 opened at The Negros Museum yesterday in celebration of the National Heritage Month and will run until July 31.
Guests of honor at the opening were Bacolod first lady Dominique Benitez, Councilor Em Ang, Lauro Alcala Jr. and Armita Rufino.
The exhibition was presented by the Filipino Heritage Festival, Inc. (FHFI) and the Metropolitan Museum of Manila with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
The show earlier opened at the Museo ng Makati on May 11, and will run until June 3.
The travelling exhibition pays homage to National Artist for Visual Arts Larry Alcala, who began his career in comics in 1946 while still a student at the University of the Philippines, where he later graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 1960.
Co-produced by The M, FHFI and NCCA, the exhibition connects with participating city museums to broaden audience reach and engage with communities on a national level through the arts.
Larry Alcala was beloved by millions of Filipinos who looked forward every morning to his serialized cartoons, which depicted scenes of local everyday life, in daily newspapers throughout the 70s and 80s. Two decades after his passing, Alcala continues to appeal to different sectors of audiences with his humorous, hard-hitting and timeless visual commentaries on Philippine society.
Larry Alcala: Slices of Life, Wit, and Humor was first organized and exhibited to the public in May 2022 by The M, FHFI and NCCA, in cooperation with SM Malls.
Curated by award-winning artist and former student of Prof. Larry Alcala, Ruben “Totet” de Jesus, who is currently a faculty member of the UP College of Fine Arts, the exhibition brings together a significant collection of Alcala’s works from the 1980s up to his retirement, after which he devoted his time to mentoring young artists.
